Kim Campbell

Kim, 2nd from left, and teammates pre-race.

Hometown: Chapel Hill, NC

Education: Psychology and Political Science at UNC-Chapel Hill

Athletic Background:
I was a gymnast until I realized I was much better at swimming.

What gets you out of bed in the am?
My boyfriend…literally. He pushes me out of bed and tells me to, “go kick some butt at the pool!”

Triathlon career highlights:
Winning the Amateur race at Rhode Island 70.3 last summer.

Season goals:
I really want to race fast and consistently and learn from every competition.  Also, I’m doing my first Ironman distance race at Rev 3 Cedar point, so I’m excited to see how I can perform at that distance.

Favorite workout:
A long, long ride with friends.

What/who inspires you?
All the people I train with every day here in North Carolina. They are a great group of people who work hard and always have a smile and encouraging words to keep you going. Also, I am very impressed by Andy Potts who made the transition from swimmer to triathlete through a lot of hard work and dedication.

What insight/advice would you like to share with aspiring triathletes?
It is really important to enjoy the process. If you aren’t having fun out there a win doesn’t mean very much. Like I found out last year when I was injured, your friends will be there for you even when triathlon isn’t.

Why do you race triathlon?
I love everything about it…the lifestyle, having a great excuse to spend time outside, getting to eat whatever you want and even the long hours and pain that goes into success in this sport.

What has been your biggest challenge in triathlon?
Deciding not to race 70.3 Worlds last year in order to fully recover from a stress fracture and be ready for the 2011 season.

What is your biggest strength in triathlon?
My ability to ignore pain. J

Shout out to:
Dan and Mike – It’s ON! My family and boyfriend, Chad, who are so supportive of my training and racing.

Hobbies:
Hanging out with friends, playing outside, reading, traveling and someday I’m going to learn how to scuba dive.

Onward to 2013

We’re just a month away from race season! This is the worst time of the year for me. Everything is so close, but still so far away. Racing is just a few weeks away, but there are still plenty of painful workouts before then. The weather is trending in a positive direction, but there are [...]

Balance

By Erika Erickson As an athlete, I struggle a lot with finding and maintaining balance in my training.  This isn’t so shocking, because I struggle with finding balance also as a grad student, a friend, a daughter, a sibling, a roommate, a significant other, a…well, you get the idea – it’s hard to balance all [...]

My Top 7 Training Tools

Often friends and training partners ask me what products and tools I use for training and recovery, so I thought I would share my list of favorites. These are all tools that I find most essential to training, racing, and recovering (other than my bike, running shoes and swim goggles!) I wanted this list to be [...]

Greater Expectations – Goals for 2013 Season

From the time we’re in grade-school until we’re settled in our 20′s – some of us, even in our 30′s – we’re told that setting goals is a key, if not the key, to achieving what we want in life. Some people are better at setting goals than others. That is, they either knowingly or [...]
