Sports Physiology Review – The Off Season
Eric Bean, MD, MS & Alex McDonald, MD
Ahhhh…the off-season! Finally a time for some well-deserved R&R after a long hard, and hopefully successful, season. At first glance, the off season is straightforward. Just do less working out and do it easier. And for most intents and purposes, it is a simple and straightforward (though often overlooked) part of your season. Let’s take a closer look at the purpose of this time of year, if nothing else it will make your feel less guilty about being “lazy, [read more...]
Recovery – Are you Getting Enough?
Alex McDonald, MD
Recovery is a broad term to describe all the small things we do as endurance athletes that allow us to train in a highly repeatable manner. The difference between “exercise” and “training” lies in the “details” of recovery. Recovery allows an athlete to maximize their workouts day after day which will ultimately lead to improved fitness and reduced risk of injury. [read more...]
Gear Review – Cervelo P4
Cid Cardoso Jr, Owner InsideOut Sports/FFT coached athlete
The much anticipated P4 has been in the market now for over 3 year and initially it had been received with a mix of awe, curiosity, desire and a wait and see attitude. For 5 years the Cervelo P3 ruled the time trial and triathlon markets as the supreme time trial machine, with more Ironman and professional time trial wins than any other bike in history. After 3 years and some tweaks of the original model, does the P4 live up to its sky high expectations? Yes. [read more...]

CompuTrainer Chronicles
Kristin Andrews, FFT/IOS Pro Development Team
Before I got my Computrainer last year, my limited experience with it included casual indoor rides at our local bike shop where it provided a fun diversion from normal winter trainer rides at home, gave you something to look at while riding, plus the fun of “racing” your friends and riding different courses. While these are all great features and perhaps the more well-known aspects of the Computrainer, I have since come to learn about the Computrainer’s other features that are an extreme value as a training tool. Coach Alex’s Recovery Blog
Alex McDonald, MD
It has been 4 months since I was hit by a truck while riding my bike. When I think about how far I have come in that time I am amazed. Yet, I certainly still have a long way to go to get back to where I want to be. I have been walking unassisted for well over a month and I feel a bit like a normal person again, and at times even athlete. The fracture in my left tibia is still not healed yet and I still have quite a bit of pain at the break site. [read more...]

2011 FFT Pro Development Team Camp
FFT Staff
There was some great training, some great learning and some great swag handed out. However, the most valuable result of the whole weekend was more than just training and learning, it was the friendships and relationships that were formed and/or renewed. There is a lot more to a team than simply wearing the same uniform and this weekend solidified that intangible aspect of the FFT Pro Development Team. [read more...]

Kona Ironman World Championships Race Report
Mike Lavery, FFT Coach/Athlete
My second trip to Kona has come and gone, and I couldnt be more satisfied with how the race went. I shaved 19 minutes off of my Ironman PR, and a whopping 30 minutes off my Kona time from 2009. I hope you’ve shaved 30 minutes somehwere recently, because you’re going to need them to read this report. [read more...]

Today in Kona, Hawaii, the 33rd running of the Ironman World Championship saw Craig Alexander break Luc van Lierde’s 8:04:08 course record with an 8:03:56, and win against a stellar field. Over the same course, six FFT athletes excelled in the harsh conditions and claimed 3 podium finishes. [read more...]
Myrtle Beach Half Max Championship Race Report
Nathan Smith, FFT Athlete
In May 2011 I completed my first triathlon ever. It was one month after I’d purchased a tri bike (Cervelo P2) and a bit premature. I raced the White Lake Half and completed the race in 5:14 (with a penalty for riding to far to the left that cost me 4 minutes). Just completing the swim distance was a feat for me as I could hardly swim one length in the pool at the beginning of March. I decided to race the Halfmax National Championship because it was late enough in the year for me to get some proper training in after my first half Ironman and I was thrilled to have qualified for the race in my very first triathlon. Columbia Triathlon Race Report
Kristen Andrews, FFT/IOS Pro Development Team
This was my 4th year in a row racing the Columbia Triathlon, but first time as a pro. It’s a local race about 30 minutes from home, and a frequent site of training rides. I really enjoy this race as there are always a lot of friends/training partners and familiar faces racing and the course is very challenging, but beautiful, and the race staff always have a way of making sure every participant has a great experience! DC Triathlon Race Report
Brian Duffy Jr., FFT/IOS Pro Development Team
Being escorted through the streets of downtown Washington D.C. near the White House and the Capitol building is an experience often exclusive to the president of the United States. I’m not the president, but I did have quite a similar opportunity at the DC Triathlon. [read more...]
